The Older I Get, the More I Relate to Squidward
You read that correctly…. as we journey through the ups and downs of life, we often find ourselves relating to our favorite characters in pop culture. Whether it’s identifying with the unwavering optimism of SpongeBob SquarePants or the wisdom of Mr. Krabs, there’s a character for every stage of life. However, there’s one unsuspecting squid who becomes more and more relatable as we grow older: Squidward Tentacles. Yes, the grouchy, clarinet-playing neighbor of SpongeBob and Patrick holds a special place in our hearts as we embrace the quirks and idiosyncrasies of adulthood. In this article, we’ll explore why, as we age, we seem to channel our inner Squid.
“Bikini Bottom Blues”: Appreciating Peace and Quiet
One of the first things that make Squidward so relatable to us is his love for peace and quiet. Squidward’s longing for a serene existence away from SpongeBob’s incessant enthusiasm (my coworkers) strikes a chord with those of us who value a moment of solitude. Remember the episode where SpongeBob and Patrick camped out in Squidward’s backyard (my cubicle), creating chaos, and Squidward longed for peace and quiet in his own home? That’s a situation many adults can identify with.
“Artful Escapes”: The Joys of Art and Creativity
Squidward is not just a cashier at the Krusty Krab; he’s an aspiring artist and musician. This creative side of his personality speaks to the adults who have hidden talents, dreams and passions that often get buried beneath the responsibilities of daily life. Squidward’s persistent attempts at playing the clarinet or pursuing art, despite frequent failures, mirror the struggles of many adults who aspire to balance their artistic pursuits with their professional lives. Hey, at least he’s trying right?
“Balancing Bikini Bottom”: Navigating the Work-Life Balance
Squidward, despite his grumbling, teaches us about the eternal struggle of maintaining a work-life balance. Many of us find ourselves juggling demanding jobs and personal lives, yearning for that elusive equilibrium that allows us to enjoy our hobbies, just as Squidward does with his clarinet, without feeling overburdened by our responsibilities, aka 9–5. His portrayal as a Krusty Krab employee is just a front for a squid who dreams of more leisurely pursuits, this really resonates with the challenges of the traditional workforce, especially in a post-covid era.
“Social Sigh-uations”: Facing Unwanted Social Obligations
We can all empathize with Squidward’s reluctance when it comes to attending social events or dealing with people we’d rather avoid, do they have irish goodbyes in Bikini Bottom? In the episode where Squilliam Fancyson arrives at the Krusty Krab and Squidward is forced to pretend he owns a five-star restaurant, his discomfort and subsequent failures remind us of our own awkward interactions at social gatherings or work-related events, part of the reason I have zero interest in attending high-school reunions. On top of that, I didn’t like you then, why would I fake it now? Who can relate?
“Friend or Foe?” Grasping the Complexity of Relationships
Squidward’s complex relationship with SpongeBob and Patrick illustrates the intricate dynamics we encounter in our own lives. His mix of frustration, affection and exasperation toward his overly enthusiastic neighbors mirrors the intricate relationships we build with friends, family and coworkers as we grow older. We’ve all experienced moments when we both love and can’t stand the people around us, just like Squidward (I just added love here in case my boss reads this).
“Squidward Unleashed”: Embracing Individuality
Squidward is unapologetically himself, quirks and all. As we age, we tend to become more comfortable with our own eccentricities and idiosyncrasies. Squidward’s unapologetic individuality reminds us to embrace our own uniqueness. Whether it’s his love for art, classical music, or his insistence on sophisticated tastes, Squidward’s individuality stands out in the colorful world of Bikini Bottom. We should strive to be the shining cephalopod in our own circles this week.
Conclusion
In a world full of SpongeBobs and Patricks, there’s a little (or a lot of) Squidward in all of us, just waiting to emerge as we navigate the joys and challenges of adulthood. This beautiful squid reminds us to appreciate the simple things, pursue our passions and maintain our individuality, all while balancing the demands of life. So, let’s raise a glass of kelp juice and toast to the character who becomes more relatable with age. Cheers to Squidward Tentacles, the embodiment of wisdom in the world of Bikini Bottom.
